The painter Yakov Basov 

Maternal grandfather

Born in Simferopol in the Crimea on February 2, 1914, Yakov Alexksandrovich Basov first studied painting in the workshop of academician N. Samokich. In 1933, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Leningrad. He graduated in 1937, which was also the year he met Lucia Bornstein, the mother of Irina Bassova. 

The Crimea served an inexhaustible source of inspiration for him. He established himself over the years as an eminent landscape painter, watercolor painter and marine painter. He died in 2004 in Alupka, the city where he lived and worked for 50 years. He was named People's Artist of Ukraine and Laureate of the State Prize of the Crimean Republic. 

His works have been exhibited in many countries. In 1997, Alupka opened a museum dedicated to the painter. More than fifty pictorial works, offered by the artist to the city, are exhibited there.
